G-PACT: Girls Making Pacts, Taking Action

Girls’ social leadership groups for 90 4th/5th grade girls met weekly during lunchtime.

What I Wish My Parents Knew

Empowering Parents to Support 21st Century Teens. Formed by high school principals and faith leaders. Karen joined this committee in 2017.

 

2013

Went into Full-Time Youth Work on Prevention of Social/Emotional Issues

Karen retired early from PUSD after 29 years teaching to focus on this work.

 

2013 - 2015

Impactful Student Assemblies

All girls’ middle school assembly, “Be Brave: End Cyberbullying”, and at 3 elementary school assemblies, “Choose RESPECT: Digital Citizenship”.

 

2013 - 2016

Focus Groups

Held meetings with high school and middle school student leaders to best understand their needs. Meanwhile, conducted a great deal of research and determined most effective practices.

 

2015 - Present

Formed Partnerships with Universities & Colleges. Student Teams Create Curricular Content.

To date, we are partners with California State University San Marcos and Palomar College.

 

2016

Most Effective Practices Established.

Providing a safe environment for students to express themselves, while building trusting relationships and discovering their life’s purpose. This can only be accomplished over a period of 8-10 one-hour sessions in small groups, led by older peer leaders with a research-based curriculum.

 

2014 - 2017

SWITCH 7th/8th Grade Program
Put Yourself in Other’s Shoes

Year 1: Girls’ 7th/8th Grade Social Leadership Group. Began our 1st pilot with pilot with 3 high school seniors.

Year 2: First pilot with boys’ groups. Ran separate girls’ and boys’ groups with larger teams of mentors from a college of ministry. Created more specific objectives over 8 sessions.

Year 3: First pilot with girls/boys combined during large groups, separated into small gender-based groups.

Year 4: Final pilot year.

 

2018 - Present

SWITCH Adventure 9th Grade Program
“SWITCH the Story, Live Your Adventure”

Year 1: First pilot year in Health/PE department, 1 high school.

Year 2: Final pilot year in 2 high schools.

2015

SOLE Effects became a Non-Profit Corporation.

Established Board of Directors.

 

2015 - Present

Grants, Individual Donors, Special Events

Grants from COX Communications, Deputy Sheriff’s Association, Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary, 4S Ranch-Del Sur Community Foundation. Individual Donations. Special Parent Educational Events including movie events.

 

2016

CSUSM College of Business – Senior Experience Project Team

“Research for Leadership Program Comparison Locally and Nationally”.

Summary: SWITCH is not like any other mentoring program throughout the country.

 

2018

CSUSM College of Business – Senior Experience Project Team

“Marketing and Expansion Analysis”.

Summary: Rebranded and established expansion plan for 1, 2, 4 years in current school district.
